October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month However; we must remember that as we age, the chance of getting breast cancer rises. Remember your risk also rises if a woman matured early or goes thru menopause before age 55. Women who have family members with breast cancer or ovarian cancer may wish to be tested for the two genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2 that greatly increase the risks. Other risks include being over weight, using hormone replacement therapy, using birth control pills, drinking alcohol, having a first child after age 35 or having dense breasts.
Symptoms may include a lump in the breast, a change in the size or shape of the breast, or discharge from a nipple. Breast self exam and mammography can help find breast cancer early when it is most successfully treated. Don’t forget men can get breast cancer too.
